I noticed my column wiring wrapped in electrical tape - never good. Pulling it apart to make repairs today, I find this:
Summit Racing has a number of column connectors, including the American Autowire 36882, that I believe I can adapt to fix this issue. I cant quite track this connector down on the wiring diagram in the CSM - is there anything else missing? 8 plugs used in a 9 wire holder?
The creativity of previous owners has always amazed me. I'm assuming a novice attempted a turn signal switch replacement.
Amazingly, everything seems to work, including cornering lights. I was surprised to find this level of destruction when I started my goal of soldering and shrink tubing this mess this morning. But what a hack job. I'm pretty sure the AAutowire piece can be cut and spliced onto the harness but I'm hoping someone can confirm or deny before I drive 45 miles to get it.
I'm not sure if that connector would work. You mentioned you were soldering some repairs into the harness. If you can solder and you have heat shrink you probably don't need to replace the connector.

The middle connecting pin is missing - the brown and purple wire have been spliced together below (you can't quite see that in the pic). Also the far left pin is damaged and won't come up higher in the connector to make a proper connection. If the aftermarket connector won't work or fit, I'll need to source an original from someone. The reason I think this one will work is that they are designed to mate a modern column to the old harnesses - but they really only reference Chevy, Pontiac, etc.
I made the drive to Summit and got the Am Autowire 36882 column adapter. The curved connection is the same as the GM piece (see the pic below). Now I just need to be careful attaching the wires to make sure I get the colors right. Ill snip off the flat connector and solder them to the current harness.
I got the new end piece attached to the jagged wires from the column. Im trying to figure out how these route under and over the column. Page 1.11 section 12 in the assembly manual has a side drawing that seems to show the turn switch wiring running down the right side and the harness coming over the top of the column and meeting near the bottom in front of the neutral switch. The back harness connector has a clip on the back - where does it connect?
Can't help w/ an answer to your question but that's nice work, Bob.
Thanks, Norm I routed the wiring over top of the column and it's a snug fit, so I'll let it ride there for a while without using the clip. It won't move or rattle where it is. At least everything works after I did all that. Tomorrow I'll get the headlight switch out and repair the vacuum hoses and I hope that fixes the headlight up/down issue.
Best thing is that they still make that curved connector and pins. Everything snapped into place. It was about $25 for the little wire harness, but totally worth it. I understand that connector should work for '67 and newer models. Just have to make sure you get the wires in the right order. They were NOT the same as what the CSM showed.
