Ignition switch wiring, 64 F85 upgrade to HEI

Does anyone have a photo of the ignition switch terminals/wiring with call outs? I am completing the wiring and install of a Pain(ful)less harness in my 64 F85 but am also making multiple changes to the ignition system and drivetrain. Not the best combination for troubleshooting, I realize

I am using my factory dash mounted ignition switch and have completed rudimentary wiring to it. In testing out the system I have the appropriate power when in ACC mode (to radio wiring etc) as well as in the RUN position (dash warning lights, power provided to heater blower motor etc). I have two additional wires off the switch not yet accounted for, a pink and a smaller gauge black with pink stripe. The latter wire is a thin gauge, solid wire that provides 12volts in the crank/start position.

The painless harness has a pink wire marked for 12v to solenoid I believe(well it may be marked "coil", I will have to look again!).

What should that 12 volt/crank black/pink wire be connected to? Does this go to the coil? Starter solenoid?

I will be using an HEI distributor, with standard Chevy smallblock setup in terms of Starter/solenoid and alternator.

Any thoughts on this? I am yet to install my engine, but would like to get this sorted now rather than trial and error once it is all installed.

Thank you and my apologies if this is covered elsewhere in the forums; I could not find an answer after reading many threads.

The pink is the wire to the bulkhead connector on the firewall. From the engine side of the connector is either a plain wire for HEI or a resistance wire for points.

I thought the black pink is all the idiot light 12v in run position. (from ignition sw under dash)

If its underhood then it may be the resistance bypass wire from the Solenoid to coil +. On my car its yellow.

Did you order a kit from painless for a Chevelle or a F85 since you went Chevy power?

Hello Eric, I have a 12 circuit universal muscle car harness, so it is not entirely a plug and play affair. But what you are saying makes sense...as that black and pink is such small gauge wire it must be for idiot light. I will re-check the solid pink off back of ignition switch, I don't recall having any power on it. I would think for HEI connection I would be looking for full 12 volts in RUN position. Will have to verify.

Thanks for the information, any others feel free to chime in!

Yes, the HEI requires full voltage in both the ign. run and start positions.

Eric and others,

Looks as if my ignition switch solid yellow wire has 12 volts in both RUN and START. The painless harness has me wiring one other wire to this, but it appears as if I will also need to add in one more wire in the harness (COIL +) to this yellow wire/terminal. That will give me voltage to the HEI in both RUN and START, which I believe to be correct as you mentioned Eric.

The alternator and FEAD kit I have is a newer (70-80's?) setup that does not require the old external voltage regulator. So I believe on that I will attach the alternator exciter wire (12v) to terminal 1, and then an output wire to the lug. Painless shows a jumper being added to the lug and going to terminal 2, albeit with a resistor if there is a run-on problem. A concern here is that my painless "Alt output" wire is carrying 12 volts now. But I do have things temporarily hooked to the battery to test things, so I may be backfeeding this wire inadvertently. My thought was that this should only be voltage coming OUT of the alternator (13-15 volts?) to feed and charge the battery.

Thanks folks for any thoughts on this....
