Ignition switch

Hi,I'm putting a tilt column in my 71 cutlass that had a floor shift column in it to begin with. What I,m finding is the Ign. swt. on the column is different from Non tilt to Tilt. The Elect plugs(Two) one black one white will not plug into Tilt from Non Tilt switch.I can can get them to fit if I twist the wires around and they will fit into switch, but no power.Anybody have any ideas.Thanks,Tom. Just so you know the switch on Tilt column is a tilt column switch.

That's strange. I've swapped tilt and non-tilt columns a number of times, and they always just plug right in.

It sounds to me as though you're saying that you are able to plug the plugs in, but things aren't working. If that's the case, you need to check connections and fuses coming and going. I'd also check the ignition switch on the nes column - could be no good.

While the tilt and non-tilt ignition switches are different, the connectors and wiring in the connectors are identical. Yes, you need to flip them around, but you shouldn't need to change the location of any wires in the connectors. Are you sure the switch on the tilt column is installed correctly and aligned correctly with the actuating rod? One thing you can try is to remove the switch from the column, plug it in, and try to actuate it with your finger. If it still doesn't work, it's possible this switch is bad.

Want to thank Joe & Mike for their input on my problem.I had bought a new switch because the old one smelled burnt. This was while in progress of rebuild of column.Looks like the NEW switch was bad.Put old one back on and Veh started right up.Hope i don't have to go back under the dash for awhile.God bless bucket seats(Easy removal). Thanks again guys, keep up the good work you do. Tom.

+1.

And, I'll throw in, "This is why, when people say that they changed perfectly functional parts 'just to be sure they don't fail,' I suggest that it might be better to stick with the good old parts, and save a few bucks as well."

Got the part from Advance auto who supplier is BWD.Never had problems with their parts prior.Going to try and return part???(elect.)places don't usually accept elect.parts on return. You are right Mike about sticking with the old parts, but since I had column on work bench and the switch is inexpensive why not?.Thanks again for input,Tom.

BWD is Borg Warner, a perfectly good parts supplier. Unfortunately, bad parts do get through the system. In addition, Advance's computer listings have a LOT of errors in them (just try to buy Oldsmobile motor mounts from their listings...).
