Jonas, Have you searched the electrical forum? There has been a lot of stuff there on HEI conversions as this seems to be a frequent question. I'll bet your answer is lurking in there.

On your points ignition there are 2 (3if you have a tach) wires left when you pull the distributor. Run a new 12ga wire from the ign terminal in the fuse box to the BATT terminal on the HEI. Check and make sure you have voltage in both the key on and start positions of the ignition switch. If you do, cap and stow the old coil wires in the harness. If you have a tach connect that wire to the TACH terminal on the HEI. Your done.

Note, the timing settings that were used for your points distributor are now N/A.

To put it simply, none of those wires can be used.

Of the two wires that are connected together, the yellow one is the wire that connects to the starter solenoid R terminal, to provide the coil with a full 12V while cranking, and the cloth covered one is the resistance wire that supplies reduced voltage to the coil at other times.
I'm not sure what the third wire is.

As Eric says, the HEI requires a full 12V at all times, and cannot be fed by the resistor wire, so you need to run a new wire.

You can either follow the resistor wire back to its terminal in the firewall connector, remove the terminal, remove the resistor wire, and replace it with a 12ga copper wire, or you can run a 12ga wire directly from the heavy pink wire that comes from the ignition switch.

The yellow wire (which does not look yellow in this picture) can be taped up and ignored, or you can connect it to the HEI BAT terminal along with your new wire - your choice.

You must have more than one wire connected.

You need to trace where each wire goes.

Did you connect from the terminal marked IGN on the fuse box? The reason it won't turn of is that your not connected to a keyed 12v source, or as Eric suggested you have more than 1 wire on there and it is not connected to a keyed source.

You can plug it directly into the terminal in the fuse block labeled "IGN," but it's always better to have it soldered solidly to the pink wire or connected through the firewall plug -- hate to accidentally kick out the plug while driving down the highway.

The IGN terminal uses a 1/4 inch crimp female spade, it just slips on and your done. This may not look exacly like your fuse box.

Your other option is to follow what Eric stated above or you can open the harness and follow the resistance wire back to the bulkhead connector. Remove that pin and solder it to a new wire running back to the HEI and retape the harness.

That is exactly what I did when I converted to HEI ignition, I opened the harness and removed the terminal at the bulkhead and replaced it with a new distributor power wire. I also removed the resistance wire to help clean up the harness as well. The car started right up with no problems, I adjusted the timing then also.
Thanks, Ron

Wanting to be able to return mine to stock, I installed a relay and did not cut the original wire.

That's another way of doing it. I have a similar setup on mine in conjunction with a Ford starter solenoid to work with an aftermarket mini starter with only an S terminal.
