Headlight Switch & Dash Lights Dimming feature

So the dimmer (rheostat ) doesn't appear to do anything yet when I turn it counter clockwise to turn on the courtesy lights, they all come on: Gear Shift position light, rear courtesy lights and the under dash lights come on. So I'm assuming I have a bad headlight switch. This is on my 1975 Olds Cutlass Supreme (H/O). Anyone else have an issue like this and next question would be how that wood grained trim comes off to access the switch? Is that a pressed in (with clips holding it in place) or ??? THen, in looking in the rear "bin" of the center console, there's a light socket there that comes on with the courtesy lights (i.e. when opening the doors). BUT I don't see a spot for it anywhere. I was suspecting there was a floor light for the rear seat, but that doesn't seem to be possible. The wiring only goes about half way back there, unless I'm missing a liner for little compartment and there was supposed to be a light that comes on (i.e. like the glove box light) in that area! There's also two wires which now I'm starting to assume are for a switch- much like the glove box. Thanks in advance for any help.

The rheostat in the headlight switch can and often does go bad.

Thanks Joe, I think I'll just get one ordered. I see NAPA has them available. Also, is it hard to remove that bezel ....? Is it held on with clips or screws?

You really should get these ordered and on the way. Original print copies only. Don't waste time and money on digital copies, they lose critical detail and often leave out pages. There's also a Hurst/Hatch roof service manual that came out in 1976 when it became a regular production option. They're invaluable when servicing your car.

Thanks and I do have both, but they are over in the car as I left them for the shop to reference.. I should maybe look for the Fisher Body manual. Bob
