H.M.T. lamp

A gray wire under the dash, also seems to be connected with the ash tray light, the heater indicator lamp. What is the H.M.T. lamp? I have the dash all pulled apart and I'm trying to get everything to work like it should.

right in the middle of the diagram, next to heater lamp and ashtray lamp.

It's a '64 Dynamic- though the docs seem to indicate this is for all models in 1964.

I "think" H.M.T. might refer to Hydra Matic Transmission. I have no clue what cars of any manufacturer &/or for any model year had them but some cars had a lamp/light which would illuminate the transmission gear indicator (PRNDSL) position either on the dash or the column?

That's got to be it- Hydra-Matic Transmission. And yes, there's a lamp with a gray wire and a plastic plug-in connector do-hickey that snaps into the hole in the back of the gear position indicator. I'm trying to account for all the little brackets and little lamps under the dash. The ventilation controls look as though they could be back lit but I don't see anyplace to plug in a lamp. Maybe it's already inside and wired up with the power and fan switch wires. AND- maybe you can tell me about the 2 little green lenses on the center trim molding, under the radio *****. They end up directly over 2 lamps that I thought was the ash tray lamps. I'm not sure my bulbs are any good and I have to chase all my grounds. I'm curious what those little green lights are for...

Thanks Norm!

Pretty sure those are likely map lamps/lights. Can't say about a 1964 Dynamic, but most cars have/had one or two map lamps/lights located about same area as (below) ash tray lamps. Most often the lamps were clear with a colored (translucent) off-green or off-blue lens(es).

Without a 1964 document for me to reference & limited familiarity of a 1964 Dynamic, the other "possibility" could be the heater/defrost control switch illumination lamps/lenses. Sorry, shooting from the hip.

Norm is correct. HMT = Hydramatic Trans. SMT = standard manual trans. The HMT light is the lamp in the shift quadrant on AT cars.

When you're driving at night and smoking a cigarette as all people in the 60s did, the little green lights would be illuminated with all other dash lights in order to help indicate where to tap your cigarette ash into the ashtray. The bulbs there light up both the green dashes and the inside of the ashtray. One green light will illuminate the passengers, and one will illuminate the drivers. There would be green lenses covering the light going into the ashtray as well. Lights are generally super dim at night, so I swapped out with LED & drilled the light holes bigger so they shine brighter. I personally like it more, but up to personal preference.

Dude, I was thinking the same thing- about them being really dim. If I redo the radio (then, I can get my hand in there to remove the lamps and mounts) I'm going to drill out the little hole so I get more light behind the green lenses.
