Flashers

Thanks to the members of CO, I have been able to repair the windshield washers, windshield wipers, convertible top switch, the horn button and the clock. Next task: the flashers. I looked on the steering column and there is no button to depress to operate the flashers. What I see appears to be a hole in the steering column. I will appreciate what I should see and the parts needed in order to return the flashers to operating condition. Will I need to remove the steering wheel? Fyi: the turn signals work correctly. Car is a '71 Cutlass Supreme convertible, automatic, floor shift.
As always, I will appreciate your help.

Post a picture of what you are looking at. The flasher switch is built into the turn signal switch, so worst case you'll need the switch and ****. Best case, just the ****.

Part # 398165 should be correct for all 1971 Cutlass models. Available from various suppliers.

I took a few photographs of what I see instead of the flasher button which is missing. I hope the photographs help.
There is no button for the flashers.

Looks like either that's the wrong turn signal switch or it is not aligned correctly. Or, the housing part of the steering column is clocked incorrectly. That hole for the **** should be at about the 4 o'clock position when looking at the column.

Which is probably why the button is missing.

Thank you for responding. I'll buy a switch and flasher button. What is involved in moving the housing for the steering column to the proper position? Will I need to remove the horn button , horn contact and steering wheel?

You have to remove the steering wheel and lock plate to access the turn signal switch. Removing the lock plate requires a compressor to compress the spring so you can remove the retaining ring. Once off, the turn signal switch is accessible. I wouldn't buy any parts until I had eyes on the current switch to see what's going on.

I'd prefer to work on anything on a vehicle other than the steering column - just a real nuisance & annoying to me, but as Joe indicated I wouldn't buy anything until you have eyes on what's going on with the turn signal switch &/or the housing of the steering column. You may have the correct switch but the housing isn't clocked correctly. Yeah, if you don't own the hazard flasher **** you're going to need one of those.

Are the flashers and turn signals controlled by the same switch within the steering column. Thank you.

The flashers are controlled by the turn signal switch, but it is a different set of contacts on the switch body. It's really two separate switches built into a common housing.

Thank you. I spoke with Fusick today. I was told the switch for the flashers and turn signals is a PN # D 6208?

I don't have the Delco crossover number, but the original GM part number is 1997963, which was used on just about every single A-body made by GM from 1969 through 1980 or so. Everyone sells these.
