You will have to take the inner door panel off and investigate the mechanism. I would be willing to bet that something is bent or loose, the clicking you hear is the solenoid that is supposed to move the latch mechanism, at least that is working.

What year is your car?? Could be the actuator is defective OR that the linkage that goes to/from could have fallen off. Depending on the year the retainer locks for the linkage differ.

It could be a lot of things. The first question is, are these vacuum or electric locks?

Ohhhh, I didn't know there were vacuum operated locks, interesting. Was there some kind of flexible vacuum hose from the jamb to the door? Didn't think about that.
