Distributor Cap

Can anyone tell me where is the #1 plug is located on the distributor cap on a 72 455 is. I am putting back the spark plugs and forgot to mark the cap. I am thinking that it is the first port just left of the point adjustment opening window. I know what the firing order is.

It should be pointing at #1 spark plug.

I don't know what the factory stock location for #1 is, so I would suggest you pull the #1 plug out and crank it over to TDC. That's the only sure-fire way to find it. What I usually do is put a small wad of paper towel in the spark plug hole. Bump the starter a few times. When the paper shoots out, you should be at TDC. You should even be able to see a very small part of the piston through the spark plug hole. See where your rotor is pointing. That should be enough to get you going.

This is a bit more detailed:

Well #1 on the cap is supposed to point at the #1 cylinder from the factory. But checking is a good way to be sure it is installed correctly.

Maybe...maybe not, all things are not as they're supposed to be, life ain't TV fix-it shows and how-to books.

One word, Oldchassisservicemanual.
You anti-CSM guys are way better than me, my heroes, I've been working on cars for over 40 years and I still have to look at the instructions.
