Brake light problem

I want to get some others' opinion about my problem. I have a 67 CS convertible that I call my barn find CS. I parked it in the barn back in 99 now I'm working to get it back on the road. I thought I was close to getting an inspection but as I was checking systems, I found that the brake lights on the right side are not working, left side works fine. The turn signals work on both sides so I know the the wiring and the bulbs are good. All the lights are nice and bright so I don't think a lack of a ground is the problem. No errant lights come on when switches are moved or when the brake is depressed, the right side brake lights never come on. Tail lights work as they should.

I figure its the turn signal switch but I haven't yet tore in to it. Is there something else I should check prior to disassembling the column. If you agree it is likely the switch, is it something I can repair or do I just get a new switch?

Thanks
Dan

Turn signal switch, or the wires thereto.

Check the wiring schematic in your Chassis Service Manual, split the plug at the steering column, and test to be sure you have full continuity a that point, then use the other side of the plug to test the signal light switch.

The switch is very likely to be the culprit.

Pretty much has to be the turn signal switch. The wires from the switch to the bulbs to ground are the same ones for brake as well as turn, so if the brake lights work, those are also good. There's only one wire from the brake light switch into the turn signal switch, so again, if any brake lights work, that wire must be good. That only leaves the turn signal switch itself.

Just to be sure, however, the OP did verify that the problem behaves the same with tail lights both on and off, correct? If not, check grounds.

Thanks to both of you for responding. I have ordered a new turn signal switch.

Try turning your 4-ways on and off a few times. Sometimes that switch gets halfway on/off and interferes with other circuits.
