Bench Testing a Tic Toc Tach (Tach Operation)

What would I need to bench test the tach (Tic Toc Tach), .....I don't have access to a point triggered ignition at the moment, and would like to verify the operation of a tach.

Thanks, Dave

The TACH connector on a HEI provides the same signal as the negative side of the points. power and ground are the only other connections.

If you can rig up a signal generator or rheostat, the tach should be looking for about 1-4VAC to ground. Verify on the negative side of the coil on a running car with a similar ignition, as Joe said. Set your VOM to VAC, and measure across the negative coil post and engine ground. The voltage readings will vary with RPM. From there, you should have a reference for your bench test.

I don't have any vehicles at my disposal that have either a point type or GM HEI igniton (they are all crank trigger/coil on plug ign systems), were would a guy source a low cost signal generator? Found a Corvette vendor (ZIP Corvette) that had a YouTube video showing a unit that they offered, but after contacting them I find that it has been discontinued. I'm not very litrate in electrical testing,.....so I'd like to get something that is pretty straight forward to use.

Thanks for the input.

Dave

You don't know anyone with a 1980s-vintage GM truck?
