Autometer tach mounting

I'm about to purchase this autometer tach for my 72' cutlass.

http://www.outperformanceshop.com/Au...p/aum-3780.htm

I'd like to mount it in the place where my broken clock currently sits.
What would be the strongest and most professional looking way to do this?

Thanks,
Dan

That's a good choice. You may need to modify the bezel to mount it, but it has been done countless times so it shouldn't be too difficult.

I wish I could offer more help, but I have a factory tach and thus didn't need to modify anything.

I found the tach new in box for $80 locally, I just wanted to make sure that this is achievable. I've also seen it done on here, I was hoping someone who'd done it would chime in.

I used a clock blank and cut it out where my Sun tach just fit tight in it. Worked well and just bolts in as the blank for clock would.

Yep sun super tach II drops right in the clock case when gutted sets behind the dash bezel with no cutting . The one you are looking at may work the same way.

Did the same thing with my '71 Cutlass around 1985 and it looked pretty good. Thing still works too!

Wow, I just thought of this idea yesterday when I was looking at my broken clock.

Help! I ended up getting this tach:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Equus/390/6088...ductId=1560069
I cannot see anyway to mount it in the dash. I havent been able to separate the clock face and gears from the glass and bezel due to the time adjuster rod not detaching. With just the empty clock housing the tach is too long to fit in will I have to cut up the housing to make it fit? Even if I cut it up how would I secure it in the housing?

I also tried just setting it in the woodgrain bezel from the front but have found no way to secure it nicely it would just spin. I was thinking maybe just a bunch of electrical tape to make it snug and push it in like that.
Help! What do I do?

Dan

One way would be to start with a factory clock blank. The empty plate that screws in in cars that did not come with the actual clock. You can cut out the center to slip over the outside of the tach. I used a hole saw the right size. When I did mine it was a nice tight fit and holds it securely. Then the blank has the screw tabs that screw into the normal spots in the dash. This holds it in place as the factory clock/tach would be held. I have a Sun tach, but yours looks to be similar size.

Ok I've got it secured in the wood grain bezel. I'm looking for a good grommet to run the tach wire through I don't want to drill. Would I run the red switched power wire to the spot on the fuse box labeled IGN? And for the lights just splice into the power going to the lights now? Also last question what do I do with the old wires that were attached to the clock?

Just FYI. As mentioned by others above, I secured mine with an old clock delete bezel. Good luck with your install.
