The rest of the harness is in great shape. There has to be a way to save it.

 

Give American Autowire a try. I believe its www.americanautowire.com. I used them to replace my entire wiring harness. The only harness that I didn't replace was the dash harness. The bakeolite housing was cracked around several of the fuses. I sent the dash harness to them and they replaced the entire fuse block as well as the high beam plug. I was happy with all of there repro harnesses as well as the refurbished dash harness.

thanks for the info. I'll check into them and see what's available. it would be a waste not be able to use it.

 

I believe that 99% of the time that they will try to clean up the dash harness unless it's been butchered up. Since the dash harness is not subject to engine heat, outside elements ect..., they will clean, retape and replace what's needed.

 

If you aren't concerned with "originality" you can always order a wiring harness from Painless. You have to know how to solder though.

Have you tried a media blaster to clean it up?

I had a Painless harness put in my 78 Camaro and it wasn't "painless" without any schematics or notes included.

I gutted the Painless out because the install was fubar'd and put in a AAW Highway 22 kit myself ......as a newb and it's awesome.
Every single wire is labeled the ENTIRE RUN of the wire on the sheath.......so troubleshooting in the future is CAKE.

American Autowire is a waaaaay better product and they give you enough schematics to make a newb a master.

 

I've never used a Painless kit, I just always see it in the car magazines.

Thanks for all the input. I called Painless and they said they don't restore fuse blocks. AmericanAuto said they don't do much past 1962 for Olds. The front and back of the fuse block is really bad. All metal is rusted to the point of crumbling. I'm thinking the best option is to get an after market block. There must not be much demand to restore fuse blocks.

 

If you do not want to rewire the car, and you just want to replace the fuse block,
I'd STRONGLY consider the American Autowire Highway 15 or 22 kit. Unless you want the OEM look of course.
IF you want the OEM look, you'll have to look at their Classic Update kits with the cylinder fuse blocks.

The reason is the fuse block is COMPLETELY separated from the harness by screws.
So you can cut your old one out, and put the new one right in place without removing any circuits.

I work with electronics daily and wouldn't mind at all installing something that nice or doing maintenance on it in the future. Nice piece of gear!

Unless something has recently changed, American Autowire has dash harnesses listed up to 72 on there web site. It might be worth giving them another call. I delt with Donny who was very helpful.
