I plan on using the car for road trips and the single rear speaker and factory AM radio just doesn't cut it. The car already had a radio installed at one time in the past as there are 5" rounds in the kick panels but no wiring and no head unit. I wanted something that could be easily removed for cruise nights, shows, etc. and I also wanted a place to put a tach and a power point for a phone charger, etc. I thought really hard about installing an under dash unit (the one that a member on here makes and sells) but would have to install it to the right of the huge old style gauge trio that came with my car.
So I decided to make a box that would just sit on the tranny hump. To remove, unplug a couple of wiring connectors and its out. Just posting this to give others ideas.

Put me down for one that can go from car to car with speakers included. That way I can have great sound in all my cars. Lee

 

Tom I actually have enough for a couple more. After I finished it, and listened to the 5" rounds I realized I should have mounted a couple 6X9's in the sides of the box for some better bass. But instead I put a couple of small Bose house speakers on the back seat. they fit perfectly nest to the armrests and take up very little room. It's not a 'Bumpin' ride, but it works.

 

Throw those pictures in Hemmings, Craigslist, and the rest, priced at $499 with 3 weeks delivery [depending on radio] and watch the orders pour in!!!

I wish I could afford Bose , I would have like 6 of those little speakers that would probably whip my 20yr old speaker box ..... if anything it would sound way better

 

This is actually a great idea . I was trying to come up with something for my stereo , and this is it . I'll have to contruct something , and lay some of that woodgrain sticker on it to match the dash

 

Awesome! That is a great idea, I will be making one in the near future. I have been trying to figure out where/how to install a decent stereo. I may just include the speakers on the side of the box.

My car was broken into when the previous owner had it, they had a unit mounted under the dash, it was the only thing taken, but they damaged the drivers side door pretty good. I like that this could be removed and stored in the trunk when parking for an extended period. Thanks for sharing!

 

That looks really nice. Did you bind the pieces yourself? I'm talking about the edging detail. Did you put that on there? or just use the right pieces from the donor piece?

When I went to buy the carpet, they were out of the binding, so I used nylon webbing from the surplus store. I would use different piping for the vertical fronts if I could do it over. I bought a yard of bulk carpet (new) thats the expensive stuff.

Well, you guys have me thinking seriously now. Tom, Lee. Let me know if you are serious. I am going to make a couple more and see how I can fit the speakers into the box. As I said, the carpet is a large expense so dealing with the non common colors may be an issue. If you 2 are serious, let me know if you want a tach, how many power points you want, and if you want anything specific in a stereo. I'll do the first couple cheaper since you'll be the test subjects.

 

I would love to have one of those, especially if we can do the in and out with the unit.. my dual gate console might be a deciding factor there. I have a couple of AM-FM-CD head units. You thinking a couple of speakers on the side?? Could use some custom fitting for my 68 I am guessing. Maybe having the in and out ability isnt that much of a factor for me. hmmmm.

 

Yes, I was thinking of doing one with speakers. I'm not sure I can get 6X9's in there, but should be able to do 6" rounds. we'll get together, and get you one made up. how long before you have the console in?

 

My Dual gate is bolted down with like 3 or 4 bolts....not an issue to remove it. The console just sits on the floor and the shifter holds it down.

 

Built something like this myself a while back. Made out of cardboard because i'm poor! and speakers and control unit from a gaming chair :P Yours is worlds better though!
