Alternator Wiring Question

1965 442 - Before I install the new 400, I'm looking to order a new Engine Harness and Front Light Harness. Too many old splices for comfort so may as well do it now.

With all the splices I wanted to check the diagrams first to make sure the new harness will have the same connections as what is currently there. Never know.

I see only one issue with the current wiring that does not match the diagram. The diagram shows a green wire exiting the engine/dash connector that is labeled on the diagrams as going to the Engine Temp Switch. However on my car this wire was directly connected to one of the alternator terminals. The alternator has 4 terminals. Everything worked properly on the car before. Any ideas what is going on here? I don't see any diagram showing a wire that is directly connected from the harness connector to the alternator. What is this connection for as the new engine harness will likely match the diagram, and this green wire would go to the temp switch, not the alternator. I should note there is an external regulator, and those wires looked to be correctly wired.

So you're sure that that green wire is not going to the temperature sender?

It's impossible to see where it goes in the picture.

It goes to the back of the alternator (it was spliced to a blue wire).

Thank you.

The blue wire is the Field wire.

I can see no reason why the field wire should be connected to the Temp. wire.

Have you checked to see what is connected to the other end of the Temp. wire?

And how is your Temp. light working?

It looks like the green spliced to blue is connected to the alt ground post. Is this correct or am I mistaken? If it is to the ground post remove it and put it on the temp switch. The alt doesn't need a connection to ground at the post as the case is already grounded.

You've got better eyes than me.

Why would someone do that?

You're correct, it appears to be connected to the grd post. Not sure why anyone would do that. I have installed oil/temp/volt meters so the stock temp switch is not used.

Bottom line, the new harness I order will work correctly, I just don't connect the green wire to anything.

It does not make sense as that would cause the temp light to be on all the time. Its sensing ground to light.
