Alternator problem
Alternator problem
Hey guys I have a 1969 Olds Ninety Eight convertible with the 455ci engine that I am restoring. I am having a charging problem. I replaced the alternator and the voltage regulator still no charge. The car had a small fire under the hood when I first got it due to a shop towel being wrapped around the power steering hose that I was unaware of that eventually touch the manifold.I got the wiring fix or at least I thought it was fixed but seeing that I am not driving the car at all at this time it's apparently not. So my question is where does the wires go that runs from the back of the alternator there's two in the plug and the one on the bolt. I am thinking that there is an open in one of these wires and if there is then I can replace them with the proper guage wire and hopefully solve my problem. Thanks in advance
Welcome to classic Olds!
Did the problem start after the fire? Are any of the wires' insulation melted? If so, then they need to be replace regardless. Do you have a service manual and wiring diagram for your car? If not, that would be the first small investment.
Do you have an ohm meter? If so you will need one - a cheapie at Harbor Freight will even work for this purpose.
Check the positive junction block for loose connections or corrosion - this is the place where a bunch of the red hot wires connect (on a stud and nut.)
It sounds like you have an open connection somewhere, although some members here DID have experience buying faulty alts and regs right off the shelf.
Hopefully, the parts house sold you the right units, also.
Hopefully this will get the gears turning...
