I have a 5 gallon bucket full of alternators here, and was wondering if there is a simple procedure for testing diode trios, voltage regulators, and rectifiers other than trial and error. Electronics is not my strong suit as I am still ignorant on the subject.

I usually just buy the rebuild kits for 20 bucks and swap everything, but I'd hate to throw away original parts that are still good. Is it as simple as ohming everything out?

You can check the diodes and windings with a meter. A continuity check can be made on the trio and diode bridge. The meter will only read in one direction and not the other if the diodes are good. The windings can be checked as well for an open this way. The internal regulator cannot be checked with a meter to my knowledge. While operating there is an opening in the rear of the alternator that reveals a tab that is on the regulator that can be grounded. This will put a full load on the alternator and you should should see maximum volt output and also tests to see if regulator is good.
