8-track tape player wiring ..........
The problem, my new 70 Cutlass convertable came with a USA630 repro fit Olds radio from OPG, which I like to keep, but it also has the factory tape player. The tape player wiring was not connected at all and I would like to get it going if possible. There are a total of 8 wires coming out of the back of the tape unit, two groups of three and two single wires. The 2 single wires I have determined to be the + wires of the front & rear speaker wires. On the two groups of 3 wires, each has a black that is directly grounded to the case. That leaves 4 wires who's functions are unknown. 2 yellows (1 for each plug) and a blue/black tracer on one and a light green on the other. According to the factory shop manual, here is what I know so far, the tape player shuts off the radio when a tape is inserted. It also switches the front/rear speakers from the radio to the tape player. The wiring diagram shows one of the 3 wire groups plug going into the factory radio, presumably to shut off the radio and radio speaker output.
My question, can the player work as a stand alone unit with its own 2 speakers? And if it can, can anybody decode the wiring for me? I have had no luck finding the wiring color code on this unit, the Fisher body Manual didn't have it, only description and R&R, no specifics. I'm assuming I need to use at least 6 of the wires, power, ground and +&- for each speaker. I'd love to bench test this unit first, but don't want to ruin it by experimenting to see what wire is what.....I usually have good luck figuring out problems but this ones got me stuck.....

Contact Randy (W70442) on this site. He rebuilds and sells those units. Very helpful and knowledgeable of your player.
