70 fuel gauge repair

1970 Rally Pack fuel gauge dead. Pegged past “F”, doesn’t move at all. Started by grounding the sender wire back in the trunk (nothing), pulled the gauge cluster and tested the gauge directly at the pins and it doesn’t budge.

The other gauges in the cluster operate properly.

Figured I’d ask if it was worth breaking the can open to see if there is anything I can repair? Otherwise I guess I need to buy a repop Rally Pack....

Thanks

Which wire, exactly, did you ground? You pull the connector in the trunk apart, and you now have TWO wires. You ground the side (wire) coming from the front of the car, not the side coming from the sender. Then turn the key to the ON position and observe the gauge. If the gauge is functioning correctly and there is no problem with the wiring from the rear of the car to the gauge, the gauge should move to E.

Disconnected the connector (tan/brown wire in the trunk going to the sending unit). Ground the side that goes back to the gauge, turned the key to the on position, fuel gauge needle doesn’t move at all.

That’s why I pulled the gauge pod, to verify the gauge itself (figuring if the gauge proved to be functional, I knew I had to troubleshoot the wiring from the gauge to to trunk).

Fuel gauge does nothing. Other two gauges in the pod, respond (actually working properly with car running).

Pulled the gauge pod apart and pushed the needle to “E” then to the center. Put it back together and tested it. Works great!

Put pod back in dash and turned key to ON and needle moved to the correct (estimated by the amount of gas i think is in the tank) position!

Must’ve just been physically jammed all the to the right (F side)......?

It'll probably fail again at some point. Might want to look for a replacement.
