68 442 wiring problems
Last ride in the 442 I had some problems. My main positive cable running to the starter grounded against my oil dipstick. It melted through the dipstick, the least of my worries. When this happened the car just shut off. When I got the cable away from the short I started the car but something wasnt right. Now the ignition never shuts off. You can turn the key off and the all the idiot lights stay on and the door buzzer sounds like the key is still in the ignition. You have to pull the battery cable so it doesnt drain the battery. I have replaced the engine wiring harness the light harness and the battery cables, starter motor, voltage regulator, points, coil, disassembled the ignition switch and nothing works. I am really frustrated with this because it is a beautiful car and I want to be able to drive it. If any of you electrical wizards know what could cause this please let me know it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi, I could be wrong, but I think you have an ignition relay on the firewall. It's possible the short welded it in the on position. Try this. With key off, and power to car, unpug the relays one at a time. There could be up to three, (horn, heater, ignition). If one shuts off ignition, but doesn't make a "clicking" sound when you unplug it, that should be your problem. Let us know how it goes. Jim.
