Here's a half dozen from RA which work - yours is listed - you might begin doing your own research (maybe before you purchase a part).
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...,flasher,10139
NAPA says it fits your vehicle:
https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/NF_EL12
O'Reilly Auto Parts says it fits your vehicle:
https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b...r/el12/4542954
I'm going to assume the salesperson at Advanced Auto was correct selling you this unit.
As I said previously - Post #2 (above).
I don't know, since I'm not expert, how many worldwide international companies manufacture signal flasher units for a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass and I'm not certain how many of these manufacturers have changed the part number of the units they manufacture and/or provide upgrades to the original parts they manufactured (if they have upgrades available).
There is also information (for free) on the Internet in which you can review part numbers and customer reviews to make informed decisions. This part number is an upgrade to previous model numbers and I am not going to perform research to determine what the benefits are of this particular model and manufacture.
Please refer to Post #2 (above).

Nothing will blow up - your previous flasher is a thermal flasher this upgraded flasher is an electro-magnetic (mechanical) flasher w/ a longer life span. This type flasher (generally) replaces flasher in vehicles post-1990 when LED lighting became available. This EL12 will operate for LED bulbs if you elect to employ them.

I always use a dab of dielectric grease on the blades. Just enough to coat the blades before you insert the flasher. I always use a dab of dielectric grease whenever I have electrical components on motorized vehicles which come into contact w/ each other.

You are correct about that, Ken. More so, whenever I have the chance to apply dielectric grease I always ensure I use it on any bulbs & sockets - as it will certainly reduce the timely effects of moisture leading to corrosion.
