I just plugged in my map light( it has been unplugged since I bought the car). Only time it lights up is when I open a door, will then light up no matter what position the switch is in. I assume I have it plugged in correctly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks to everyone who helped with the instrument panel light. They are fine now
Caveat: This information I'm sharing is from my 1971 CS Convertible not a 1970 442.
I have only two wires (as pictured below). I think my map light works as designed. Although, I will state none of my lights were working by design when I purchased my car until I performed my diagnostics and followed the wiring schematic.
My map light ONLY illuminates when I turn the switch in ONE direction.
My map light DOES NOT illuminate when the doors are opened.
NOTE: I have only the orange (always hot) wire feeding into the double spade, and a single black (ground) wire feeding into the single spade.
I will note I do see the WHITE-DBL/BLACK STR wire but I think this wire feeds into the courtesy lamps from the DOME LAMP JAM SWITCH. With that said, it would make sense your map light illuminates when the doors are open (unfortunately it illuminates in any position). I didn't look behind the switch up under the dash (it's hot out there in the man-cave). Now, mine is a convertible so I don't have a DOME LAMP so take this with a grain of salt (caution). You could remove that WHITE-DBL/BLACK STR wire from the spade and see what happens. I'll see if I can noodle under the dash and see what's going on after a cold iced-tea. Since the orange is always hot, it does nothing until you hit the switch upon which time it will close the loop with the BLACK wire ground (single spade).

This is how I originally found the plug behind the dashboard. I plugged it in how I assumed it should go per the original picture. If I remove the black and white wire I get no illumination. It looks like the same type of wiring is going to the passenger side courtesy lamp. I attached a picture of that as well. I’m new at using this website so hopefully I’m replying correctly. Thanks for the help.
Yeah, you're using the site correctly. I wish I could be of more assistance here. I did go back out to look under the dashboard, but you'd have to put me in traction for me to get back up into a position to read each of my wires (which BTW are clearly labeled from when I did this the first time); yet, the ability to maneuver is very, very difficult without tearing into the dashboard itself - which I am not going to do. Recall, I do have a convertible, therefore I have no dome light; and, I'm looking at a 1971 wiring schematic. As I review the wiring schematic, I do see the WHITE-DBL/BLACK STR wire leading into the map light switch. As I recall, I have the same WHITE-DBL/BLACK STR wire leading to the console/dash wires - but again, in the schematic it also demonstrates a integration with the dome light for which I have none (convertible).
The added white wire is part of the courtesy light package and does illuminate the map light when the door is open. That white wire is the same ground signal that also operates the dome light.
