12 volt ignition issues.

12 volt ignition issues.

I recently installed a pertronix ignitor 1181ls and paired it to a 3ohms flame thrower coil. At first I did not see a resistor so I hooked them up and ran them and had a bad intermittent bog on throttle. Realized there was a resistor wire from the ignition so I threw a 30amp 12 volt relay. Hooked 30 to battery through a 12 gauge wire, 85 to ground on firewall, 86 and 87 to ignition switch and coil. I previously had 2 wired going to coil positive, one white and one black. I pulled both off and the black one was the one that seemed to trigger the relay when ignition was turned to on so I decided to hook that one up to the relay and leave the white off. Now, here is the part that has me stumped. I know that I need a 3 watt diode on the voltage regulator because when I switched the key off the car kept running. However, the car was only staying on with my foot off the has, if I pressed on the gas even slightly it would choke out and just die. Also had hard starting. I would expect this being a pert ignition it would start right away however I had to pump the gas a few times and even then stay on the key turning the car over for it to slowly want to start more and more. Drained my battery. I'm at a loss for what I'm doing wrong. Any advice?
by the way my battery was a tad weak to begin with as I kept trying to start it. Battery voltage was at 11.60 and that was the voltage I got on coil positive with key on.

With the pertronix 1181LS it should be able to just be hooked up to existing coil wires. Run the 2 out of the distributor to the coil also. Nothing else needs to be done. Th LS series is about the only style pertronix to run. Older version's are not as reliable.

Also 11.6 V on the battery is low. Should be around 13.6 or so. I would charge the battery also.

I spoke with a tech at pertronix the day before and he advised me to run that 30 amp relay setup which is why I tried that. After I installed the 30 amp relay and set it up I tried cranking a car with no luck I put some starting fluid down the carburetor and it started idled pretty high if I gave it any gas it would choke out so I let it just run on high idle turn to switch off and the car kept running which is why I know I need a diode. However I tried to let the car just run on its own and after a while it just died out and would no longer start I took the battery to get charged I called pertronics again and the tech service guy told me that the reason why I wasn't starting is because I have a low battery I'm going to charge the battery get home try and start it and recheck voltage at coil etc. By the way my engine was recently rebuilt and carburetor was just rebuilt as well to stock quadrat I don't think my issues are coming from a mechanical side

I would resolve the battery situation first. Once you do that and the issue continues you try swaping the points back to at least confirm if it is related to the petronix.
