So, as the title reads. i need help popping out the rear bumper shock absorber on my 1982 delta 88. I've heard of tying it to a tree and driving but i'm scared of having a tree fall on me LOL I've tried spraying it with WD-40 but not even a budge any help will be greatly appreciated.

 

Well, you could try tying it to a tree and not a sapling, I mean really, any sizable tree ain't coming down on you unless you hit 90 mph by the time that you reach the end of your chain, and then the whole bumpers coming off.

 

Technically, you're not supposed to do this. I've read that once they compress, they're not safe. But when my father borrowed my 76 Delta and backed into a post (How long IS your damn car?) , I knocked it out with a large hammer (BFH). You'll have more control over piston movement, less chance of doing more damage.

 

Either find a way to get a bottle jack or a bumper jack in between there and push it out, or just tie it to a tree and go very gradually, with a spotter to tell you when to stop.

Look at it this way: If the tree falls on you, it'll be a great story!

LOL well I'm going to find a bumper/bottle jack maybe prop it up with some jack stands. if all else fails, its tree time. i'll keep ya posted and i'll take some pics. thanks guys!

 

Remove the bumper and make a mark on the piston. Use a large tree (8" or larger trunk dia), be cautious, and go easy on the gas. A few blips first, not to the floor. Have a helper watch the mark on the piston and have he or she tell you when it is out the distance you need.
