In 2013, when I got ready to start up the Olds after years of working on it, I searched for a replacement battery. I found an online posting that suggested a tractor battery sold at Farm and Fleet was very close in size to the original battery. It was an Excide commercial, 30-H series. I did have to alter the top carrier to make it about ½ inch longer, but otherwise a good fit. I put a piece of ¼ inch plywood painted black, to fill the “step” in the lower carrier so I didn’t have to modify the lower carrier.
This spring it was past time to put in a new battery and I found the 30-H series almost impossible to get. I did find a replacement at Batteries +. The Duracell Ultra Flooded SL31PA is the same size as the 30H but has the battery posts set about 1.5 inches closer to the fender. This is a sealed unit that has 950 Cold Crank Amps. Hope this helps anyone looking for a replacement battery for a ’56. Chuck
A couple of years ago I bought a NAPA DC Marine Group 31 Battery for my '56. As you know, the Group 31 is pretty close to the Group 60 battery size that was original to the car. I found a vintage plastic KANT-KER-RODE battery hold down that fits perfectly, and uses the original holes to attach to the fender. KANT-KER-RODE was made near me in Clinton Ma. so I had to buy it!!
Remove the yellow caps replace them on your new battery if your new one doesn't come in yellow. Only matters if you show your car in a points type show, otherwise disregard this post.
