Welcome to C.O. 1962 is a very nice looking car. I don't know if it will work, but in 1964 Olds came out with the N33 Tilt Away steering wheel. It may work - lets see if any of the 60's specialists on the site will chime in.

1962 tilt column

Frank,
I came across this photo while researching the same tilt question as you...

Original press photo from SEP 29 1962. Oldsmobile will offer new "Tilt-Away" steering wheels on all of its full-size models for 1963. By operating a small lever at the base of the steering column Olds owners may tilt the wheel to its most vertical position for ease in getting in or out of the car. In addition, the driver can position the wheel at any of seven angles.

Look at the photo. The lady is actually sitting in a 1962 Super 88. I would feel comfortable looking for a 1963/1964 Super 88/98 tilt column.

I found a 1963 tilt column at Desert Valley Auto Parts in Phoenix last week, but they want $200 (with the steering wheel at least). I may go back before it's gone.

Where are you located? I have a tilt from a 63 that I might be coerced into selling.

Frank, you have to go into your UserCP (toolbar at top of page) and change settings to allow you to send and receive PM's.

I'm not completely sure a 1964 column will fit the 1962 car. I bought a 63 tilt column for my 64 Starfire and when bolted in it lacked a couple inches being long enough to connect to the steering box. 62/ 63 are very similar underhood, moreso than they are to the 64.

That tilt column was just a bad deal all around for me. Bought it from a guy in California who was hardheaded and wanted a certified check instead of a cashier's check or USPS money order. Went thru all that, and then after he got the check and shipped the column, the guy forgot to cash the check. When he tried to cash it 10 months later, even though certified checks are supposedly permanently negotiable as the bank sets aside money from your account to cover it, his bank would not honor it due to length of time that had passed so he sent that one back and asked me for another one. Meaning- I paid for the damn thing twice, and then it didn't fit.

And certainly it would be your call as to whether you think it would fit your car.
Mine is from a 63 Starfire. I can't say with any certainty that it would exactly fit your 62, as I have never tried it.

Anyway, details are in the PM. Let me know if you still can't get it to open after making the adjustments mentioned above.

Well I went back to DVAP today and bought the 1963 tilt column I mentioned above. Good thing because it was the only one there.

They did have a tilt column from a 1964 Grand Prix which is in nice condition (see attachment). It may fit the 1964 Olds, but the GP is a floor shift car. I needed a column shift or I might have gone for it.

I will attempt to install the column this weekend, and advise my results.

Frank, I apologize, I must have been a little brain dead yesterday. My tilt is from a 63 Starfire which also has a floor shift. You, I assume would need one with a column shift.
I sent you an email anyway.

I'm a bit confused by this reply. Are you installing this 1963 tilt into a 1962 or 1964 oldsmobile

Frank,
I have a 1962 Olds 88. My first post mentions I was researching the same question as you. My avitar is my "current" car.

I brought up the 1964 GP tilt column for Rocketraider (or anyone else looking) who had an issue with the 63 column would know where an alternative was.

I have not had time (yet) to install the tilt column. I have been busy working on my dash, replacing vent window assemblies. Mine were a little pitted, and delaminated. I will have the column in early next week, and let you know what happened.

Paul...

Tilts for me Starfires have been on the back burner along with everything else on them. Just curious how much DV gets for a tilt column. I'm sure they put a premium on a floorshift version.

I beleive DVAP gets about $200 with, or without steering wheel...column, or floor shift. I go there often, and just took a bunch of pics. http://community.webshots.com/user/87we2

FYI...
I started looking at this tilt situation closer, and I'm not convinced this will work. I will either have to modify the 63 column, or mine to make it work.

The 63 is a little longer, but has a shorter steering wheel. The neutral safety switch is different, the rag joint at the base is different, and a few other minor items are a little different.

I need more time to deal with this then I have this afternoon. I will have the column in (or not) by this weekend...
Paul.

Iwas thinking the column from the dash to steering wheel would be longer but never considered a problem with neutral saftey sw or rage joint.Spent some time trying to get specs on both columns to compare but found nothing.

The column length affected the linkage as well (where it connnects to the linkage rod). Honestly this does not look like the best choice for the tilt option. I will however keep pressing on later in the week and give you more information.

I was thinking maybe the Buick, Cadillac or Pontiac from 1961/1962 would be another choice. Does anyone know if the N-33 tilt was available on the other GM brands?

If this does not work out for me, anyone out there with a 1963 need a tilt column??

Frank,
The rag joint will need to be swapped with a shorter one. My buddy looked at the 63 column and thinks the 63 column will work (with the following modifications). Rag joint/harness plug. The harness plug will need each of the wires spliced from the 62 to the 63 (see pics).

The 63 column is 33.75 inches compared to the 62 which is 30.3. I was at DVAP this afternoon, and went looking at the 1962 Cadillac tilt column. It shares some characteristics with the 1962 Olds. I would look at Cadillac as a possible alternative.

I never got the column in the car today since I spent most of my time at DVAP.

My next project will be converting my 2bbl to a Starfire 4bbl intake/carb..see last pic.

Paul.

I know right! You can leave it there, and cut down the "comute" time required getting parts for all of your other cars! Owning a car is a privilege, but some people should just ride the bus...

I added a bunch from today to the webshots folder. Found a really nice 61 S88 wagon. I'm going back next week for the intake, carb, valve covers, and air cleaner!

Frank,
Have not picked that up in months. Still have it, but got started helping a friend do a rotisserie restoration on a 1955 Super 88. I think I will just sell that column, and focus my efforts elsewhere.
Thanks, Paul.
