Question tank capacity

hi folks, this evening I stopped at a gas station to fill my delta88, I thought the tank capacity is 20 gallons, but the amount was 21,84, so, or I have misquoted the tank capacity or at that station they cheat the customers.... what about?????

It's a '73 going by previous posts.
Rockauto shows that a new fuel tank for a '73 Delta 88 holds 26 gallons/98 litres.

That's correct. I have the '73 service manual, and 88s, 98s, and Toronados had 26 gallon tanks.

However, because the fuel pickup line comes in from the top and ends about 1/2 inch from the tank bottom, there will be about 2 gallons of gas in the tank when no more can be sucked out. In other words, if you were to run the car until you "ran out of gas" and then took the tank off and poured out the remaining fuel, you'd get about two gallons. Thus, the usable capacity is about 24 gallons, and putting in about 22 on a fill-up sounds about right if you had run it until the fuel gauge was reading near empty.

thank you folks, it seemed smaller at first sight, I must change the sightglasses....
so the car avarage is 11,50 MPG.... it seems too much even for a convertible running no faster then 60-65 MPH with a 350ci engine with a 2 brll carb

That seems a little low. While these cars were never known for their fuel economy, I've been getting 13 to 14 mpg in combined city/highway driving in my '73 Custom Cruiser, which is a big, heavy car and has a 455.

I have a 73 Delta 88 convertible and ran it dry accidentally on my 1st road trip It took 26 gallons to refill. It has the 455 and it took a good bit of the tank to get to another gas station. getting 12-13 mpg around town if I dont get on it. Fun

It did less then 12 mpg the most driven on highway, I must visit the carb man next week, the idle is too high and the starter valve don't close complitely so it get difficult to start at cold

When I drive my W-30 I sometimes get confused whether I am looking at the speedo or the gas guage.

I think I get around 9-10 mpg

Keep in mind we are talking about someone in Italy where the road conditions are very different than in most places in North America with plenty of traffic and hills. Not to mention altitude differences.

yes you're right, in North America, out of the big cities the traffic is very rare and the conditions very different, but as I don't use the car as D.D., I use to choose roads where traffic is not scareful, but anyway I believe car needs to be checked by a carb specialist, as on a trip driven for the most on highway I had an avarage of less then 12 mpg, while with the same conditions, with my 72 Lincoln town car I ran almost 14 mpg with a 460 ci instead of the 350 of my delta 88. but surely the convertible cars have a higher avarage because of the rag top that slow down the car even if it does not seems, or am I sayin' a bunch of idiocies???

Momma Mia. I didn't notice at first you were in Italy. My first question is how do you manuever a large car(s) like yours in those small Italian city/town streets?

And I got news for you......you've got to go pretty darn far out of an American city to find clear open road. In fact in NJ (where I am) there isn't such a thing anywhere in the state. From what I can tell when I fly out west is that you need to to to Nebraska or Wyoming to find clear open roads.

If you are worried about improving your mileage on the car get a good Chianti. It won't improve the mileage, but you'll not worry so much about it.

I thought all Itailians were carb specialists..........I mean with all that pasta you guys eat!!

One day I hope to get back to Italy....was last there in 70's for several weeks. It was the best country in Europe........really great looking woman!! And the beaches!!! I was 15 and topless women!!!! Great country! Beautiful People! Rich in culture! Fantastic Food and Drink!!

I'm a bus driver, cars are small in front of a bus
Italy is changed since 70's, the beaches are dirty and the beautiful Naples is full of garbage, we are full of immigrated from north africa and the law do not allow us to carry a weapon to defend our property and if you smack the nose to someone you get troubles that last for years, you could have a shock to come back now
