Interior lighting question

Quick question guys...

My interior lights all seem to work but have noticed that there is no light behind the gear selector indocator under the dash. Should there be?

Thanks

Yes, but it's different from the instrument cluster illuminating lamps. It's in its own socket, and the bulb number is 1816, which is also different from the instrument panel lamps.

It's easy to get at if you get your head down under the dash and look up at the back side of the instrument cluster. Looking from the passenger side, just above the steering column, you'll see the back side of a socket with two wires coming out of it. Work your hand up in there and just pull it straight back. It'll pop out. No twisting one way or the other is needed.

There should be enough slack in the wire for you to pull the socket down below the dash so you can get the bulb out. Twist the lamp counterclockwise and pull to get it out. Installation, of course, is the reverse of all of the above.

I have found that, even with this lamp working fine, the amount of light at the gear selector is not large. This is probably just to make sure that you can see the selector at night and not have it be distracting.

Pulled the bulb out. It broke on extraction but it the one that was in it had GE 1895 on it.

That's interesting, because when I pulled out mine, it also had an 1895 bulb in it. But the service manual says it should be 1816. The two bulbs, though, are pretty much identical, and apparently either will work. It sounds like you had a bad one, regardless.
