Bumper Jack Questions

Can someone please send info, pics on what is correct for '54-56? How long is the jack? I have a bumper jack from my '72 Cutlass I will never use, thinking about using it in the '55. The bumper jack hook is wrong, and it seems way to long (the jack itself). I will also have to drill a hole in the base for the bolt mount to the wheel in the trunk.

If you have orignal pics, that would be awesome.

The '54 may be a bit different from the '55 & '56. The Olds parts book shows a different part number. The attached photos are of the original jack that came with my '55 from Lansing.

The jack from the 1955 Olds

The length of the jack's stem

Jack instructions from under the trunk's lid on the '55

The jack set from the '55 Olds

Group 8.820
1954 Olds part number 565849
1955-1957 Olds part number 568581

Does the jack hook separate, or is it all one piece?
Thank you very helpful! The jack hook is different from many of the other pics Ive seen. Mine's a '55 too and Lansing built so I couldn't find a more accurate example!

The hook does not separate. It is "riveted" together. Also, there are "stops" on the stem ends. So, nothing disassembles further than what you see in the photos.

I would clean the bumper jack up and put it in the car for display. A bumper jack is not something I would use to raise a car and I doubt most folks would ever notice if it si the correct jack or not.

I agree with Glenn^^^^. Exactly what I did. I found a jack that looks very nice in my '56, but I ain't about to use it!

Yes, that is all I am doing, just want a jack for display with the semi-correct base I can use to bolt the spare in with. Agree, never use a bumper jack on your baby, use a real jack and jack stands.

My '72 Cutlass jack is too long and base won't work, otherwise I would throw that in there.

At the Nationals, many moons ago, there were two other 55 convertibles there, we spent quite a bet of time going over this jack issue on how they are mounted alongside of the spare tier. Seems that the conclusion was that convertible jack stems are shorter than regular 55's and no one (judges) knew or cared which way they could fit. So it's still a mystery that I no longer worry about... Tedd

Yep, bought one for a Buick that is close and calling it done. Thanks for the input.
