Batwing air cleaner dimensions

What is t eh diameter/ width of the 4bbl air cleaner used on mid 50's cars. I am told the caddy units are the same, but I have seen 2 'batwing' air cleaners that appeared different is size.

Looking at one which is 18" diameter.

Takid 455, the one on my 55 ( and I'm sure it is original to the car) also measures 18 inches by 15 inches, but you are correct I also have see a batwing that was about 1/2 inch longer than mine and may have come off a Cadillac but I'm not sure......Tedd

Batwing air cleaner question

My 56 Super 88 , 324, with jetaway transmission has a big round oil bath air cleaner. Did it come with a batwing air cleaner originally?

The Caddy breather has the air inlets further back on the body of the breather (about four inches) and can easily be identified.

Frank, your car originally should have came with a Batwing if it had a 4 barrel carb that is (supers usually had 4 barrels) but if it was ordered with a 2 barrel they were a round squatly stew pot looking afair.....Tedd
