455 in a 1955

Just wondering if anybody out there has put a 455 into a 1955 super 88? if so how much fab work is involved and how hard and expensive is the swap minus the cost of the motor and trans? been thinking about doing it sometime just wanted to be armed with good info, if i decided to do it. Any info is much appreciated.

Welcome to the site!

Yes, I've not been able to find the old posts describing it. But Pat (citcapp) has put a 455 in both a 1948 and 1957. Then Dave (oregontopcat) put a 455 in his 1956. If neither of these guys see your post and reply you might try sending them a PM.

I believe it requires quite a bit of fabrication. You have to fabricate side mounts and a crossmember for the transmission and I think you have to mount to engine slightly off center to the passenger side to clear the steering. I am sure citcapp will tune in and let you know all the details.

I've done the swap in a 57 which is similar. The 55 has a larger power steering box then the 56 and 57. That appears to be the major obstacle. I believe others have used the 57 box with mods to the lower part of the steering column to complete the conversion. Other then that minor fab skills are required to fab motor and transmission mounts. Its pretty straight forward if you have the welding and fab skills along with a good tool set

An easier conversion is to put a 394 in place of the 324, the motor mounts are virtually the same no steering problems and with just a little work the 55 transmission will bolt up. This conversion eliminates a lot of the guess work plus the 394 is a torque monster with respectable HP, lots of cool factor also....Tedd

HI, my name is rob , i like your idea about you putting a 455 in the 55, going to see that . where the mount near the harmonic balancer , that front mount, where they bolt up i think that front have 4 bolt patter, the 455 look if thereis bolting hole around the harmonic area, i know that chevy 350 have it, but then the 455 have alot of torque, thet iam looking for bumper parts, driver window, , what are you going to do with rest ,
