1959 Oldsmobile Hydramatic 4 Speed Problems

Does anyone know where I can find a 1959 Oldsmobile Transmission? I would also settle for a place to get one repaired on the West Coast. I have 2 of them but they are both slipping in second gear. Seems odd.

This would mount up to a 394 Olds for my 1964 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88.

Everyone tells me to pour some lucus in the fluid, it is some sort of additive that stops slipping, All of the old-time mechanics tell me it is the best. I am wondering what type of fluid you use in your transmission. Also, I am trying to figure out what Kind of fluid to use in mine What do you use in yours instead of type a? Also, does your trans have the fatal "burnt toast" smell to it? There was a classic transmission or somthing like that, I stumbled across it in looking for my gaskets.

Good luck with your trans, let me know how it goes.

During the shift? Do they do the same while going from third to fourth?

If so, that is how they were designed to shift. From '49 to '55 Olds and Cad Hydros lost a lot of sales to the smoother shifting Buick. Jetaway, with its one shift, was their answer. Yours is a bit more evolved, but there should still be only one shift.

I do not use additives, I fix the problem.

Whatever is on sale at Autozone, that says "dexron" on it.

I do not have a trans problem. You asked for a repair shop on the Left Coast, I posted one to call. If Dick is still there, he can do the job.

88 coupe, I was told to use lucas even if there is nothing wrong with the trans? Why wouldn't I use it? Also, do you know of anyone on the east coast that does transmissions. Thanks for telling me what type of fluid to use, A second opinion is always good, Thanks

Any quality ATF will do the job. If you feel better using an additive, be my guest.

No.

You asked me what I use and I told you. I did not tell you what to do.

lucas is a friction modifier. it is good for nearly everything(posi rearend, tranny, anything with gears, engine itself, ect)however, it will not help a bad tranny. it may help keep one from going bad, but it wont fix one thats broken.dont fall for the additive game. trust me you cannot rebuild your motor (or tranny) with a can, despite what the label says.check your local phone book. i'll bet you'll find tranny shops right by you and every tranny shop i ever saw has an 80 year old guy working there that probably helped build your tranny in his younger days.oh, and"88 coupe"take it easy. no need to get huffy.if you dont wanna calmly explain your advice, then just dont post. the kids just trying to understand what to do and why.

Read it again. This time, read what is there, not what you think is there.

If you want to discuss it further, send me a PM.

Thanks rfaller, this clears it up a bit more on why people say the use it even though there's is just rebuilt. I never knew you could use this in other things as well. And yes, your right, no matter how much they say it always boils down to "you can't rebuild it with a can". My transmission and motor are currently being rebuilt at a shop. it developed a bad knock, and you cant fix that with the 90w60 sludge that you can buy at any napa store. so I am anxiously waiting to see what it is like when it is returned.
Thanks for the info, it filled a little bit of that huge empty space in my head, but a lot more to go yet <lol> thanks again
