1956 oldsmobile power steering help needed

Ok so when i bought my 56 olds it was in a field and alot of the stuff under the hood was pillaged...my olds has power steering as i can see the box attached to the lower steering colum...being a a newby at the whole power steering..how does it all work? im assuming it had a power steering pump that someone took right? how does it all work together? thanks

It had a power steering pump that sets on top of and to the left on the motor. Here is a diagram of the way it all works if it will show up well enough ....Tedd

thanks Ted...im learning as i go...in a few years i will be putting in a 455 but till then im fixxing and cleaning eveything from the ground up..if i had a bigger garage it would be a frame off...now im just trying to piece together whats missing...

Cobalt, there is a chance I have a power steering pump, probably with out it's attachment bracket. If you are interested in it let me know and I'll try and look for it( haven't seen it in years but I never throw anything away). It probably would need rebuilt....Tedd

thanks tedd...im just wondering if i put the 455 engine in i might be able to go with newer pump that might be cheaper and easyer to get parts for..who knows..but the actual time of that is a few years out...im taking car apart restoring the front end right now...and everytime i look out into my garage it puts a smile on my face...
