14" Tire issue..Wow they got pricey

My two front tires have great tread, but during a recent road trip ( 500+ miles)
I noticed a thumping sound. Last Friday I pulled the tires and gave them a good inspection....#1 the tires are over 10 years old and #2 I found a bulge....tires are junk. I have been pricing the tires...Holy crap they are expensive. I never thought tires would be an issue with a 1964 olds. Not only are they big bucks but even used tires have all but vanished.
My wife just got tires for her 2000 olds siloette and spent $ 58.00 per tire installed. The same store wanted $101.00 per tire for my 64.
Any thoughts...I won't put the new tires on until next year.

You're lucky you can even find the right tires for your can. For my '66's, the proper size tires are no longer available at any price. You either have to go two sizes smaller or change to 15" or larger wheels. I recently bought a set of 15" Buick Riveria wheels and new 15" tires that have the same diameter as my original 14" tires. I bought Olds decals and put them on the center caps.

You're shocked that a tire rim size that hasn't been in use for close to 20+ years is rare and higher costing now ??

Supply and Demand buddy. There's not many people in demand of a 14" rim sized tire anymore.

15" is the rim size.

So the answer to your question is NOTHING as long as the overall diameter of the tire is the same.

Even 205/215 profile 15" tires are not common like they used to be. I had to ORDER 225/75R15 for the Custom Cruiser last year when the tires got slashed- not a tire store in town had them in stock.

Hey navvet: First of all, what tires did your 1964 Dynamic come with? Do you want to go with Bias Ply Tires or Radials?
My '67 Delta 88 takes 8.55 x 14 (28.1 diameter), which is close to 225/75/14. You can not find 225/75/14's. I went to 235/70/15. I was sad when I had to give up my 14" wheel covers. I went with 15" rims from a Chevy Truck and wire wheel covers from a 73 Olds.

Here's a handy tire size calculator... http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Aceshigh...up until this year I have been able to go to junk yards and get a tire as a spare
and could go to most major national stores and get them. The tires on the car are goodyear and are ten years old.
According to every manager at NTB, Firestone, Discount tire and others it was just the last two years they have all begun backing off manufacturing them or keeping them in stock.
Thats why I wrote how suprised I was that they quickly became expensive and hard to get.
And up until this year it was never an issue getting a tire for my car

Tires have gone up in price significantly in all sizes. My dually uses BFG 255/85-16 Mud Terrain tires. I bought two at Spring Carlisle last year for about $145 each. A pair this year from the same vendor cost me $240 each. Oil prices have gone up. Big surprise.
