10 vs 26 spine??

Hello folks,

It's time for new clutch and pressure plate - throw out bearing. I know it's a 10.5 but I see I have a choice of ordering 10 spine or 26 spine?? what's the difference ? it's for a 1964 olds 442

Thanks ! Sixtyfour

If your trans is original, it has the 10 spline input. The stronger 26 spline came about with GM a half dozen years later.

Thanks! I now understand the difference. Never to old to learn, just remembering is the task!

Thanks Sixtyfour

As I was looking to order the 10 spine C&PP, I noted that Rock Auto says it was an 11 inch??? I though it was 10.5? What was the orginal size/ I think 10.5

Anybody out their that can comment?

Thanks Sixtyfour

Your flywheel should be drilled with both patterns -- 10-1/2 and 11" -- so you could use either setup if youre buying all new components. Its wise to tear it down first so you know for sure. I do have one flywheel that is drilled for 11" only but I think it came from a "big car" -- not an A - body? If you find it will accept 10-1/2 then get the 10-1/2 and not the 11" -- unless you can pick up a great deal on an 11" - The car doesnt care which one you use!!

I always go for the largest diameter clutch that my flywheel can handle. More surface area to grab.............

Be careful of clearance in stock bellhousing, I have run into interference in Chevies in the past going from 10.5 to 11. Don't remember running into it w/ Olds but just a heads up.

Yes, make sure of what bolt pattern you do have. 10-1/2 is stock, and some of the "early" early flywheels were only drilled for the 10-1/2 like my '65 Jetstar 1. If yours was drilled only for the 10-1/2, you can always replace it with a dual patterned flywheel and go with the 11" (as I did with my JS1 FWIW).
Honestly, the 10-1/2 should be sufficient for a stock 330 in a '64 A-body.
I'd be curious to know what bolt patterns you have on your flywheel.

Not a problem with Olds.

For a small block Olds, even the W31 came with 10.5" clutches, so that will be plenty. Also the smaller disc will shift easier due to less angular momentum.
