Change 1972 Cutlass Supreme open Diff to LSD

Hi I would like to change from a normal open differential to a limited locked one, but I only want to change the differential itself and not the gear ratio, is it possible to pull the axles out to change the differential without changing the bearings and seals i.e. I would just put them back in after changing the differential?

Will this diff fit 1972 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS Yukon Gear & Axle YDGGM8.5-3-30-1 Yukon Gear & Axle Dura Grip Positraction Carriers | Summit Racing

Your axle uses the common Chevy 8.5" ten bolt carriers, and so long as your gears are 2.73 or numerically higher this will work. Yes you can simply pull the axles and reinstall them. The MIGHTASWELLS would suggest that now would also be a great time to change bearings and seals, but since there are no C-clips, changing them later is relatively easy.

You should have 28 spline if it’s an untouched rear. You can use the 30 spline but will need to replace the axles.
