Can i install this 672 carrier in my 68 olds Cutlass S. had a 2.56 0r 2.73 open rear end O type. It is 28 spline I installed a 3.23 posi unit in the rear end with a 671 carrier.



i think i would need 31 spline axle shafts , bit question is will the 672 carrier fit in the housing?

Well...Yes does not quit cover it...
Yes it will fit with retro carrier bearings and yes with 31 spline axles...BUT what axle bearing system do you have?
If you have sealed bearings the stock 1967 1968 w30 31 spline axles will bolt right into a 67 68 69 housing...BUT if you have a 1970 housing with oiled bearings set9 / a9 you will need custom build axles
We can have either of the axle shafts in 31 spline made for you if you need.

Remember that the 672 carrier can only hold GM gears 3.42 3.90 4.33 4.66 5.00 sets.

31 spline axle housings had larger carrier bearings and saddles to fit the 31 spline axles

I have a 68 open diff. originally a 2.56 I put a posi unit with 3.23 unit. I was thinking to put a 3.91 , but the posi unit is a 672 and probably needs 31 spline axles. Can I install that in my existing unit , Brian Tick mentioned on the forum I need 31 sline axle shafts and different carrier bearings

Yes you can retro fit a 672 carrier into a standard 28 spline 12 bolt olds housing.

AS Brian stated- you will need the 31 spline axles from an original 67 or 68 w30 rear or we can get you NEW moser 31 spline axles all ready to go.

The next hurdle is the carrier bearings ....
the 672 carrier bearing is the LM603012 AND LM603049 X2 BEARING AND RACE SET
THE CONVERSION BEARINGS ARE THE EATON POSI UNIT BEARINGS WITH ARE LM102949 AND LM102911 that will make the 672 carrier fit the smaller 28 spline saddles and still keep the inner diameter bearing hole for the carrier bearing 672 hub intact.

YOU will need to use GM gears on the 672 carrier not the richmond gears which are for the 3.08 and 3.23 carrier.
