72 442 Rear Differential ID

Hi,

I have a 72 442 that I am trying to make sure the differential is correct. Base on the window sticker it should be a posi 2.73, it is a posi but I can't find the ID number were they are suposed to be on the right tube. The only numbers I could find is on the housing and they are 407296 on the frt right side of the housing and a CE on the lefts side. Does anybody know if these numbers are correct? My 442 was built in 12/71.

Thanks,

These numbers can be very faint after all this time. Use a wire brush to knock off some dirt and see if the numbers are there.

Also, I think all posis had a tag held on by one of the diff cover bolts that said to use special oil. It the tag there?

Welcome to both of you guys. I agree that there should be a tag on the differential cover.

Thanks, there is a tag there and I know it is a posi, I just want to verify it is original to the vehicle.

Thanks

Window sticker? You have the window sticker? Very cool! Tell us about the car, and pictures are required here.......otherwise, we won't talk to you! (jk)

There is no way to tell for posi sure (like that pun?) if the rear is original. To verify that he housing has the same ratio code as the window sticker, you should be looking on the back side of the passenger side axle tube about 8" from the differential case. The letters are stamped and they are about 1/4" high. That location is approximate and often the stampings are upside down.

And by the way, both my '66 and my '69 442s have the license plates "KZ 442".

Thank You, Awesome Plate. I am restoring a 72 442 U code convertible. I have the window sticker and protecto plate. I am still looking for the build sheet, it also has a W25 hood which was a $154 option on the window sticker. This is a great website and I appreciate all the help so far. Thanks again.

KZ, is that CE on the axle tube or the differential housing casting?

Hi,

The CE is on the left side of the diff housing casting not the axle tubes.

Thanks,

Okay, you should find the axle code on the tube as I mentioned above.
