One of the diff guru's will have to weigh in on this. From the title it sounds like the carrier came out of a late model Yukon? Or is this an aftermarket brand? John

That's what I figured when you posted about the bolt holes. The 8.2's use the smaller bolts, thus having smaller holes in the carrier. The ring gear journal is a different diameter as well,so even "if" you drilled the holes out,you still do NOT want to use that.

Forum buying

How come you did not just buy from the forum - Brian or me... ?? lol. Sometimes saving 10-20 here or there does not pay when the generic seller does not have a clue as all they do is sell NOT install..

I guess you would just go to a general MD for brain surgery or broken bone etc. too. Try to use specialists where you can. Engine,s transmission and so on.

Oh more info on why the 8.2 would not have worked too is the carrier ring gear flange is tiotally different than the 8.5. You would NEVER have got the ring gear to mesh in the housing. You would not have enough shim left to right.
Glad you found the problem before trying to modify...Were always here to help PLEASE ask before buying and or modifying a NEW part from any supplier...There is always a reason.

Good luck on the rear.

Jim

Thanks alot Jim! I had always bought stuff from ebay and had never had a problem. When i bought the item i got a message from the person running rons machining ebay aact. asking for what car did i need t, i told him 72 cutlass. He asked me numerous times to make sure it was an 8.5 because he said it was 8.2. I messaged him various times saying i was 100% sure, and he still sent me a 8.2 posi with 8.5 gears and 8.5 bearings kit. I definetly spent more money than i thought. Next time i will surely buy from you guys! Thanks again for all the help!! I definetly learned my lesson!

It's OK.A few years ago,I get a call from an "axle specialist",and the first thing he says is "I just want to let you know that I have been doing axles longer than you have, and I know more than you." He then procedes to ask me a question about the O-axles,and I had to give him a good lesson on those.I guess he didn't know as much as he thought. He must have felt some sort of initimidation to blurt something out like that, but if he knew so much, why was he calling me?I've also had to straighten some facts to some of the guys at Moser,Randy's,and some other places like that.Does that make me Jesus? No,just experienced.
ALL of the 71-72 Cutlass/442's and 71-72 Skylark/GS's came with the 8.5" 10-bolt from the factory.I just wish some of these outfits would get their facts straight before pushing a product.Sorry for the rant.Hopefully you can get the posi unit exchanged & everything good.

^^ haha... yeah well even though they payed the shipping.. i still had to pay the guy the 250 he was charging me to install the posi and gears even though he just installed the gears. Now i have to call him again to install the posi now. That whole process took alot longer and more expensive!

wHAT TO LAUGH

Try checking the Differential Wizard on RANDY SITE... I wonder what Inter did the work on that stuff. I saw a 1965 66 Wildcat having a 12 bolt chevy rear under it... LOL that is a good one. Jim

There are reasons WHY I AM an INDEPENDENT builder.

Here is the 12 bolt chevy list for a Auburn 12 bolt chevy posi carrier
Compatible Make / Model
Buick Wildcat (1964 - 1972) <<< totally wrong
Chevrolet / Chevy Bel Air (1964 - 1972) Should be 1965-1970
Chevrolet / Chevy Biscayne (1964 - 1972) 65-70
Chevrolet / Chevy Camaro (1967 - 1972) Should be 67-70
Chevrolet / Chevy Caprice (1966 - 1970) 65-70
Chevrolet / Chevy Chevelle/ Malibu (1964 - 1972) 65-72
Chevrolet / Chevy Chevy II (1964 - 1968) 65-68
Chevrolet / Chevy El Camino (1965 - 1972) <<<< wow, correct!
Chevrolet / Chevy Impala (1964 - 1972) 65-70
Chevrolet / Chevy Monte Carlo (1970 - 1972) WOW, another one correct
Chevrolet / Chevy Nomad (1968 - 1972) << Again Might be correct.
Chevrolet / Chevy Nova (1964 - 1972) 65-71
Pontiac GTO (1970 - 1972) < could be correct (even I admit when i am not sure...) lol.
Pontiac Trans Am (1969 - 1972) 1970 only

So all in all what is the percentage correct. Think about how many wrong items are shipped because of this inaccurate info ...??? I know I can not afford to have that many free shipment back.

I think if your going t be BOLD enough to list these details you should be close to getting the majority of cars correct. Should have just stuck with the rear cover gasket pictures I think that would be smarter.

2 more cents

Please everyone ask us here on the form before buying at least KNOW what you have so you can get the parts ordered correctly. Take care, Jim

JD
