Using used ring an pinions

Ok so I got a used gear set for my dads Pontiac it's a gm 3.23 gear set. The owner painted it for what I can only assume was corrosion protection or to hide wear but from what I could see it looked good. Now a long time ago I recall someone talking about media blasting the gear sets to establish a new pattern or newish. Is there any truth to this I can media blast it to do all that or just to clean it up lol. This wont be a sever duty use gear set it's for a nice cruiser non posi daily driver.

Gears and blasting

You can Media blast with very fine material but just to clean the paint off the gear or soak the gear in lacquer thinner for a day or 2...
IT will NOT let you put a new pattern in the gear the gear is used and worn in and that is it. IF it is good it will run good when set up properly IF the gear is worn wrong it will not fix that problem. Period. Jim

Cool that's what I wanted to know . I'll just dip the gear set then. Not trying to make it new or cheat it . as far as pattern goes on a used set what should I look for ?

Set it up by looking on the coast side. The drive side will play with you too much because of the wear and tear from going forward it's whole life.

Ok. Cool. I went downstairs a cleaned some paint off and after I cleaned it I could not see the wear paterns. Might be a lightly used unit who knows but thanks for the info guys.
