slip yoke removal

slip yoke removal

how do i remove the transmission yoke from a dive shaft out of a 70 cutlass. the manual says there should be rigs that can be removed but they there doesn't appear to be any.

There are several different designs of u-joint retention used on these driveshafts. Some factory installations actually used injected plastic that hardened into a groove in the u-joint cap and the yoke. This plastic needs to be sheared (usually with a press) to get the u-joints out. If snap rings were used, they could be either on the outside of the caps, fitted into grooves in the yoke, or inside, fitted into grooves in the caps. You need to look closely to see what you have.

The plastic is probably most common. Either use a big vise with two sockets, one that is smaller than a cap, and one just a little larger than the cap on the opposite side, or use a torch to heat the area (not red hot, just warm enough so the plastic comes out like a worm).
