Ring gear question

After removing the rear brake drums with a lot of effort, the axles rotate with out the ring gear and pinion turning. Every thing worked as it should prior to pulling the drums. The axles have c clips and the clips and spider gears have not changed. Thanks for any and all help.

Do you actually have the cover off so you can see the ring gear ?

Well something does not make sense. Unless you have a non posi rear and then when you are turning one axle the other one is moving the opposite direction. Is the driveshaft still hooked up ? The ring and pinion cant move if it is.

^^^This. Or an anti-spin rear in desperate need of new clutch plates.
