"I have a rear end that came from under my 70 Monte Carlo It is a BOP Rear so it would be a right fit for you 71 Cutlass. It has 3:55 Gears and a new Eaton Posi. Contact me and let me know what you would be interested in offering. It is in my way and I would like to see it go to good use."
Well that's what he said to me. Is it a good deal?

Is there a difference between rear end like transmission bellhousings?.
A chance for me to learn some more.
If so this begs the question; why has a Monte Carlo got a BOP rear end?.

the Monte carlo was kind of a step up from the chevelle, so even SB cars often had 12 bolt chevy rear ends in them- So people would buy a used monte and take all the good stuff out, sometimes an "extra" rear would get stuffed back in to keep it a roller.
A lot of monte's got stripped of their bucket seats, consoles Round pod dash, 12 bolt rears, 454's and SB 400s.

Seems like if they were equipped with a 350 4bl carb they received 12 bolt rears, 350 with a 2bl carb got 10 bolt rears.
Also a lot of 402 big block Montes were made.

So surely we should be talking about 10 bolt or twelve bolt (or others if available) rears?.
I understand the different GM divisions made their own engines for their own cars up 'til the '80s anyway, and from the late '60s GM cars shared the Turbo Hydramatic transmissions in its various forms. Were rear ends unique to each division, and if so when did they become a shared part?.

There are numerous varieties of 10 bolt rear ends so this is not just a 10 bolt vs 12 bolt discussion.
