Just wondering if anyone knows if they make an aftermarket axle retaining plate for the "O" 12 bolt axle. I have new axles and don't want to mess with the old ones just for the plates. Got a set of Moser plates but I guess they're for the BOP axle. Thanks.

Finished installing a Standard Gear Posi with Richmond 3:90 gears.

 

Are these what you are talking about? I could not find any aftermarket anywhere, and no one willing to sell me any from existing axles. Eventually I wound up "repairing" the damaged one to close to OEM (the one on the right in the first picture, and by itself in the middle). You can see the quality of the bench top repair in the far right photo. I've not yet installed them, but they are not load bearing around the inner circumference, so I'm hoping the damaged one will be OK.

 

Since you have the good one as a template already off of the axle, it might not be a bad idea to see if a machine shop could duplicate it for you.

 

Yes that's them. The ones from Moser are close, it should have dawned on me that these are for both Pontiac and Olds.

By the way the damage area in yours won't affect anything. The raised area adds strength to the plate I do believe the outsides of the plates are fairly thin but yours should be fine.

Well I just decided to use the old ones, I just cut the retaining ring then broke the bearing to get the plates off. Don't have the tools to press the bearing off.

 

Svnty442 - that's a great idea! They do look identical to the naked eye. Now, why didn't I think of that? LOL!

67Olds442x2 - I had not seen those by Moser - or maybe I did and just blew them off Not knowing any better at the time, I found a set of NIB retainers for a '68 Buick online. I took a chance on them. They did not match close enough to safely make work by altering. Oh well, only about $20

 

Just so you know the Mosers didn't fit. They were a little larger.

 

I HAVE HAD THESE MADE FOR OUR USE.
we use to sell them just have not pushed them.

they are 3/16" thick and are 360 degree with out a slot like a moser plate has.

The Moser plates I have that I'm sending back are for 1959-64 Olds/Pontiac. I should have looked these up on the Moser site first. They don't make the ones I need. Nice to know that JD race has them. I was able to remove mine from the old axles.

 

Moser sells them you bought the wrong item you need the Chevy small end bolt pattern retain plates - they are used on Mosers 7900 billet weld on ends to give chevy a bolt in axle. They sell them separately too.

 

Nice to know, I'll have to get them. I just got done pressing the bearing etc. on one of my axles and forgot you know what.
