Hello there, first thread other than my into.
Have the original 3.42 "O" rear in my 69 and have been looking for a limited slip but can only find one that is around $600.
Are there any other options?

$600 sounds like a pretty good deal to me. I upgraded the differential on my '69 4-4-2 convertible from a 3.23 open to a 3.23 limited slip and it ended up costing about $900 before it was done. Go on line to www.supercarsunlimited.com to see what they have in their catalog. There are also a couple of differential people at this site that might be able to help.

Ok, thanks. Yea i was just lookkmg at the parts. I guess the rarity of those axles hurts the supply of parts..

 

If you have not already seen it, someone posted a 588 carrier for sale - I think it was yesterday. Looks to be in great shape with bearings still attached.

I thought all the 3.42, 3.91, and 4.33 rear ends were anti-spin in the 1969 442. What is the stamped code on axel tube?

 

There is a two-digit code, usually on the passenger side axle tube, forward, upside down. It's usually either two letters or a letter and a number. That code will tell you the gear ratio and whether or not it's an open or anti-spin differential.

I don't know about the 4.33, but 3.42 and 3.91 were available both in the open and anti-spin versions.

I've never seen any reference to "open" rear ends in the 1969 3.42 and 3.91 ratios. This is the chart of the rear end codes for the 1969 "A" body cars. The 1969 dealer order guide says anti-spin was mandatory with the 3.42 and lower rear gears.

Was the TY code 4.33 rear end option exclusive to 69?

I know 4.33 4.66 and 5.00 were dealer options but 4.33s were factory available in 69 only?

 

From what I see, it could be in either a '68 or '69 "O" type axle. The '68 TY code was for 4.33 anti-spin gearing with disc brakes. The '69 TY code was for 4.33 anti-spin gearing with drum brakes (possibly disc brakes, too? Not sure about that).

4.33 gears are also shown as a factory installed option on the '67 W-30's

 

That is correct. I has forgotten about the Type O in some 1967 cars.

 

spacer can be used with a 3 series to position the ring gear so the unit stays in the middle centered in the carrier cavity I have even seen people just install and shift the whole carrier over in the case...(which I do not recommend)

Best to get that 588 and purchase new clutches and you will have almost a new posi unit.

I think I might have a 672 31 spline carrier if you want to go through all the trouble and money of swapping out to Moser 31 spline race axles. Jim

I believe the "O" type axle was not available until the '68 model year. My book doesn't show that "O" types were available in the '67 model year. Only the "P" type differential was available and it could be had with 4.33 gears.

Yes late model 67 had the 'O' type olds rears. The switch was mid year from Pontiac 'P' type to the 12 bolt cover 'O' type.

 

I can honestly say that i could never find the stamping but I may have been incorrect on the ratio as memory has not been the best with this project.
It may be a 3.23 ratio as that is what would be correct for this factory 4speed air car.
I only remember my axle rebuilder, 8 years ago now, asking if i wanted to buy a limited slip..

 

I appreciate the heads up but 5:88 is pretty far out of my range. Haha
