Need Help Identifying Posi Carrier
Well after work today I sat down to relax and started surfing Craigslist. I came across an ad for a 3.42 ratio posi rear end out of a 1969-70 442. So I skeedadled out the door to meet the owner in front of the Tolo tavern to check it out. He had the rear end in pieces loaded into the back of his pickup. So we're standing in the rain talking it over while I'm looking for numbers that I can recognize. I was really hoping for the correct housing with the code stamp for a 1970 3.42 limited slip rear end. Instead I found the R2 stamp of a 2.56 open rear end. Then I look at the carrier expecting the Eaton unit and found this instead. Well... standing in the rain I'm trying to decide if this is something I can use or if I'll be wasting my money. I finally decided to take a chance and buy it. Now I'm trying to figure out what I've got! I've seen lots of the Type O Eaton carriers but this doesn't have a casting number on it that looks familiar to me. It also has a Richmond gearset on it, so that doesn't give me any clues either. Please check out the photos and if anybody can tell me what it is I'd appreciate the help! I don't see how this could have worked inside the Type O housing. But standing in the rain trying to make a decision may not be the best thing I could have done this evening

That posi carrier is an Auburn cone-style unit. It is possible that they elongated the bolt holes,to mount the O-axle ring gear,as I have seen a few other Auburns done that way.Are those O-axle gears for sure? What spline is the pinion stem?
It is either a modified 8.5" corporate carrier,with O-axle gears,or an 8.2" carrier,with 8.2" gears,which will not work.

Thanks Brian, it may be a few days before I can play with it some more. The story I was told is that the person I bought it from got it assembled. Then he took it to a shop to have it disassembled and inspected. The shop said the previous owner overtightened the pinion nut and damaged the pinion bearings. In the mean time the person I got it from found a correct rear end for his 1968 ElCamino so put this up for sale. I'm hoping I can use this in one of my project cars but will get the details on pinion splines and if it came with Type O axles or something else. John

Is there a space between the ring gear inner diameter and the posi barrel body? Look like it to me.
So this means like Brian said they re-drill the ring gear holes oblong BUT this is NOT a good way to do this as the ring bolts have to hold the ring and also hold it centered....WHICH will not hold under heavy accel blasts... The ring will shift and cause a big failure.
Best to remove a bolt and take a picture for us. REMEMBER these are LEFT hand thread bolts.
Shoot some pictures of the pinion shaft and list the Richmond numbers off the ring and pinion.
The Unit is a AUBURN After market (it is 28 spline axle unit I assume)
