Lower Front Control Arms

I took the front suspention off of a 69 Cutlass S that I am doing a major rebuild. I was removing the bushings from the upper and lower control arms last night and came accross on one of the lower control arms that has a notch out around the bushing cylinder. Any idea's? The notch is about 1/2 squared. The notch does not look like rust due to both sides that hold the cyclinder match. When I was hammering out the bushing the whole cyclinder popped out.

Picture? Might be that the original bushing wore out and the suspension bolt wore into the arm. When a replacement bushing was installed, the wear notch remained (?)

Sounds like somone may have used an air chisel to try to pry the bushing out at one time... 1/2" is a pretty big hole though... Would have taken a lot of work to beat that in there.

Just an FYI... The cylinder should always come out with the rubber though.

Pic would definitely help to know what you are looking at- but if it is as you say, i think you should consider replacing that lower arm... a 1/2" hole next to the bushing would be a real weak spot.

Looks like I said above--the original bushing failed completely allowing the through bolt to chew into the arm and break off some of it. You would have to weld up the damaged area if you want to reuse the arm. It would be much better to find another arm.

Note how the slot on the front leg matches the hex head of the bolt. When you get a replacement, be careful that there are two kinds. Yours has the oval bushings, there are others with circular bushings. You want the oval bushings to match your other arm to avoid having to buy two different sets of bushings.

I can't believe someone was brave enough to put that back in like that. Lucky you found it now.
