Issues With Axle Vent Tube

Almost finished with my 72 SA code 2.73 open to TO 3.42 posi conversion and resto. I bought a repo axle vent tube from In Line Tube and it's too small in diameter to fit in the hole in the axle tube. A friend gave me a used OE vent out of what he believes either a 68 or 69 Cutlass rear end, and it's the same diameter as the repo. Anyone else had this issue?

Your missing the plastic base piece that is pressed into the tube first. It is the proper diameter to fit snuggly in the tube and the piece you bought presses into that. I'm not sure if anybody reproduces the base piece but that's what you need.

Nope. I replaced the 2.73's in my '72 with 3.42's as well, and also got the repro vent tube from ILT. Just lightly tapped it in. Fits nice n snug.

I agree with Joe. Several years ago I needed one and ended up ordering one of each as I didn't know which was correct for my housing. I think that was from YearOne but don't remember for sure. John

I got a replacement vent for my '71 and it pressed into a 'base piece' that was already there in the tube. Are you saying that I pressed the new vent into the broken off lower remains of the larger style vent that was there? It fit together too perfectly to think otherwise. I guess I need the larger diameter vent huh?

Thanks Joe - I'm sure I need that 2nd one - the 1236317. Interestingly, the one I got from ILT has a green top on it instead of being all white - looks nice, too bad it doesnt work.

Wait wouldn't the 3820840 be the larger one?

They made the hole larger starting in 1971,with the 8.5" 10-bolt.The 12-bolt O-axle,12-bolt Chevy, and the 8.2" 10-bolts all have the smaller tube.

Thanks Brian - I knew you'd know. Anyplace specific that sells the later one? Fusick and ILT only lists one for sale (I'm sure it's the small one).

Also, I purchased the ILT decal sticker kit. There's a green one about 4 inches long and 1/2' wide that repeats "TO" along it.Where should that one be placed - approximately? It looks like it should wrap around a tube.

Yes,that wraps around the axle tube.
the GM # for the larger vent tube is 01236317. I was able to get these through GMpartsdirect.com but I haven't checked availability lately.

1236317 works on www.gmpartsdirect.com so I called my local dealer and ordered it ($7.61) to save myself the outrageous $12 shipping that partsdirect wants. I hope that's the larger one I need.

Matt - called my local dealer - wants 6.93 for it and will have it by 4:00 PM. If you want to make sure before you buy, I'll pick mine up today and test fit it - but I'm pretty sure that Brian's right on this.

Joe

Matt - that was it - went in perfectly with just a little gentle tapping from a rubber mallet.

Whoops - sorry Mike - I'm a part time musician, and I guess when I see mmurrphy I make the automatic association (for me) with Matt "Guitar" Murphy of Blues Bros fame.

No problem. I actually knew Matt. He used to play golf at the golf course I worked at growing up. Nice guy - terrible golfer but, not surprisingly from the size of his arms, could hit the ball A TON! Played more cards with the pro than anything. That was around the time the movie came out. Didn't see him after that summer.

You can also get them from The Parts Place,in the same GM wrapper,or at least you could in the past.I bought a few from them, when I had other things to order.Otherwise they'll crank you on shipping.
Most of the rear cores that I get,the tube is either broken off,or gone,so I've been around this before.
