I'm not an expert but the carrier looks like the 8.2 inch unit to me. 1967 was a transition year and could have been the 8.2 or the type O rear ends. We've got a couple guys here who rebuild/restore/sell rear ends and componets. If nobody else posts the answer to your question I'd encourage you to get in touch with either Brian (507OLDS) or Jim (monzaz) as I believe they can provide you the information you need and probably parts to fix or replace what you have.

The reason I thought it was the 8.5 inch 10 bolt is because the bolts holding the ring gear in place are 1/2 inch which takes a 3/4 inch wrench I read that the 8.2 inch 10 bolt used 3/8 inch bolt for the ring gear I could be wrong I guess

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about that detail. If the rear end is original to your car the 8.2 would have 10 bolts holding the inspection cover to the rear end. The Type O had 12 bolts holding the cover to the rear end. But don't get the 12 bolt inspection cover mixed up with the Chevy 12 bolt rear ends. The Type O only has 10 bolts holding the ring gear to the carrier, but I believe the ring gear is 8.5 inches across and beefier than the 8.2 rear ends.

It's confusing well anyway 10 bolts on the inspection cover and 10 bolts holding the ring gear on the carrier and I seen some numbers on the axle SR 0038 is all I could make out I have been trying to research the numbers but have had no luck

That is a cone-style posi unit, for an 8.2" 10-bolt BOP axle. You could possibly have the hole welded and re-bored,to make the pin fit snug again.

You can crossbreed some of the 8.2" Chevy parts into BOP housings. I have done it,but I have a list somewhere of what exactly can be swapped. The Chevy 8.2" does have the smaller ring gear bolts,so that carrier would need drilled.
What is your current gear ratio?

Ok- from the info and the pictures provided-
That is a 8.2 from a 1970-1972 Pontiac rear. You said the bolt head was 3/4" which makes this a 7/16" left hand thread bolt.
We have spacers to handle a 3/8 bolt in a 7/16" hole if you need.

If you have a 3.23 or 3.08 they will both fit on this carrier as long as the gear is a Pontiac or early Buick/Olds 8.2 gear.

How bad is the unit. you will need to disassemble it. Looks like the pin sheared off because of dirty fluid may have seized one of the spider gears? Yes No?

do you have pictures of the pin? one way or another you will need to disassemble it.

The oblong hole damage. might be able to fit a larger cross pin..again more machine work that will cost and you may get to the price of a NEW unit soon. Jim

I do not understand this part of your first post- quoted ' 68 chevelle with open differential with 3.08 gears will my elimited slip unit fit in the 68 chevelle carrier with all of my gears' help me understand what you want to know exactly... thanks
