While I am waiting for my new aluminum heads for my 70 442 455 4spd., I am diagnosing a drivetrian vibration. The first thing I noticed is the trans yoke is sticking out 1 3/4". Is this too much?
I also checked the driveshaft angles and the trans is 4 degrees down and the pinion is 1 degree up. The front of the rear is pointing down, which should be down angle, but Spicer is calling it up angle. I know they should be equal so it looks as if I have to raise the trans quite a bit. Anyone havfe experience with this?

Was this originally a 4spd car or was it converted from a TH400?



In any case, the right thing to check is to unbolt the driveshaft from the rear, push the trans yoke all the way in, and pull it out 0.75" to 1". That's where it should be. If the driveshaft is too short, it might be a TH400 shaft.

 

The diff rotates under power, so the pinion should point down slightly when at rest. The yoke should be out about 1.25" from being fully inserted into the trans.

I do not know if it was converted from a TH400 or not, anything is possible with this car. I purchased the car from a widow in 2005.
I looked the shaft up in my interchange manual and it states I should have a 56" shaft, the one in the car is a 55".
I did state the pinion is pointed down 1 degree, but Spicer's web site calls that "up angle".
I did a runout on the shaft at the rear and it is .055", so I am looking for the correct shaft.
I like to talk to the guy who worked on this car before I got it because he should not be working on cars.

Hopefully it'll be decades before you can talk to him if you bought it off a "widow."

 

I purchased the car from the wife of the last owner after he passed away. He only owned the car for 9 months.

I have this one piece unit pulled from a 72 4 speed car. Still has it's original U-joints in it. It shows to be 56 1/2" or a tad longer. PM me if interested.
